BFIS seeks summer intern applicants

The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies offering 16 places for the BFIS ‘Intro-to-Insurance’ summer intern programmes in Bermuda, Atlanta, Chicago or London — and the application deadline of March 29 is fast approaching.

“An educational experience like no other,” is the way one of last year’s 16 interns described the programme. It is open to junior, senior or postgraduate students considering careers in the insurance sector.

These intensive, two- or three-week programmes cover all aspects of the insurance market and the job opportunities it offers.

BFIS pays travel, room and board expenses for the interns participating in the three overseas internships.

Catherine Lapsley, BFIS executive director, said: “As these programmes are short, we have found that even if students already have a summer job, they are still able to participate as companies understand the benefits of the internships and will give their summer students time off.”

She went on to say: “Students do not have to be majoring in specific subjects to be eligible. Past interns have studied history, law, engineering, marketing and computer science, for example, and found the programme extremely useful in showing them where their education could fit in the industry.”

Since 2002, some 81 students have participated in the BFIS Intern Programmes with almost all of those now graduated students working in the industry.

One intern said it was “a fantastic experience which has quite literally enabled me to progress faster and further than I ever dreamed possible at this stage in my education and career”, and another called it “one of the most immersive learning experiences I’ve ever had”.

Interested junior, senior or postgraduate students considering a career in insurance should apply to ‘BFIS Intro-To-Insurance Summer Intern Programme’ through the BermudaScholarships website at www.bermudascholarships.com.
