Dellwood Middle School were victorious over TN Tatum Middle School 45-30 in the inaugural Bermuda Rugby League match on Tuesday at Dellwood. The new schools league, the brainchild of John Layfield, will see schools compete at various venues during the week, with the programme in partnership with the Family Centre and the Bermuda Rugby Football Union (BRFU).The Bermudian partnership was initiated by former World Wrestling Entertainment stalwart Layfield. He was once known by his ring names of LBJ and Bradshaw, before Bermuda became his second home and “favourite place in the world”.Now seeing his vision blossom to reality, the Bermuda resident is pleased with how things have gone thus far.“We have started up a youth programme at Dellwood and Cedarbridge that is a partnership with the Family Center and BRFU,” said Layfield.“We have a homework academy, tutors and all volunteers are at risk and mentor trained. We have chosen rugby as our sport and we provide a meal for the children after practice.“As part of this initiative we realised the need to have something to work toward, so we started up the Bermuda Rugby League which begins play this week.“The first truly Island wide scholastic club rugby league is officially starting play this week.”Seven middle schools have joined a group of high schools to form the Bermuda Rugby League and will crown a champion on a special championship day to be determined in late April/early May.Several rugby programmes have run on the Island for some time including a Sunday rugby programme run by Robert Blee and the BRFU.Layfield said Patrick Callow, the youth development officer for the BRFU who runs the rugby portion of the Beyond Rugby programme, had been hired ad been hired to help schedule and co-ordinate the league. He will be helped by Chris Naylor, the BRFU youth leader. The Beyond Rugby group have been offered a few invitations for international action including the NYC Harlem Cup June 9.Last night saw Sandys take on Whitney at Whitney Institute
