Benn Smith lost ground on day three of the World Cup Series Miami in Miami, Florida, yesterday.

Competing in the silver fleet in the Laser class, the sailor produced finishes of 31st and 29th to slide eight places from 70th to 78th among the 100-strong fleet. The son of multiple World Sunfish champion Malcolm Smith is making his debut at the regatta, which he using as a final warm-up ahead of the Pan Am Games qualifier in Lima, Peru, this month.

Smith had aimed to qualify for the gold fleet in the Laser class on his debut at the event but was unable to achieve his primary objective in Miami.

Also representing Bermuda at the regatta are siblings Cecilia and Michael Wollmann, who also lost ground competing in the Nacra 17 catamaran.

The pair, who have already secured their place at the Pan Am Games, started the day in 22nd place in the 27-strong fleet and finished two places back.

Cecilia, who represented Bermuda in the Laser Radial at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, is on the helm while her sibling is serving as crew.

The World Cup Series is an annual circuit of Olympic sailing for elite and professional sailors.

The World Cup Series Miami is being contested in Biscayne Bay and runs until Sunday.
