Miguel Power confirmed himself to be the best young sailor in Bermuda with victory in the 2024 National Optimist Championships on Monday.

Power, who led the regatta from the first of the 11 races, saved the worst of his three days for last in the Great Sound, finishing fourth, sixth and second in the last three contests, but he had built up enough of an advantage on the first two days to sail to a comfortable success.

The teenager finished on 15 points after winning seven races and finishing second on two occasions. Power had a 16-point cushion over runner-up Thomas McBain, who won two races over the course of the regatta, with Nina Gotfredsen finishing as the leading female in third place on 31 points after winning the closing contest.

Harry Brown, who finished fourth overall on 43 points, was the only other sailor to pick up a win in the championships, coming out on top in race ten.

Evan Davis (50pts), James Ganal (65pts), Rory Savage (66pts), Noah Amaradasa (72pts), Emma Brown (87pts) and Miguel Leite (102pts) made up the top ten in the 33-strong fleet.

In the green fleet, which is made up of younger and more inexperienced sailors racing in Hamilton Harbour, James De Couto finished first ahead of Jacob Beale and Maven Lightbourn.
