Rangers' six-pack sinks Onions

MR Onions 1Southampton Rangers 6Ezekiel Stoneham scored a hat-trick as MR Onions handed out all their Christmas presents a week early at BAA Field. And while Stoneham was the main beneficiary of some generous Onions defending, Dennis Russell and Travis Wilkinson also came away feeling festive.Russell started the rout after just three minutes when he shrugged off Onions defender Phil Matthews, raced onto a Wilkinson through ball and fired past goalkeeper Dermot O'Sullivan. That it took Rangers until the stroke of half-time to score their second, when Stoneham fired home from the edge of the area, had more to do with their own unwillingness to take the gifts on offer than a stinginess on Onions' part.Too often the top-flight side tried to walk the ball into the net and often a stray foot or misplaced pass at the end denied them.Manager Keith Jennings obviously said something after the break, because it took them just five minutes to get a third. Wilkinson and Russell combined again, and the big striker waltzed past Matthews and Eddie McInally before clipping the ball in for his second. After that, the flood gates opened and the only question was how many goals Rangers were going to be allowed to help themselves to.Stoneham grabbed his second with little more than an hour gone and Wilkinson got in on the act moments later as Onions were peeled apart by Rangers' slick passing.Such was Rangers' confidence at this point that they even felt comfortable enough to let veteran Janeiro Tucker get in on the fun.Having seen his defence help Rangers to their first five goals, O'Sullivan then dropped Stoneham's hat-trick into his lap by failing to hold on to a Kemon Simmons' free kick, which Stoneham tapped home from a yard out. That brought an end to the scoring from Rangers' point of view, although Onions did their best to let Russell get his hat-trick. However, O'Sullivan rather went against the spirit of things by saving the striker's shot after his defence had helpfully parted like the Red Sea with less than ten minutes remaining.Rangers' goalkeeper Adrian Burrows had his quiet Sunday afternoon spoilt somewhat by Michael Luber's goal deep into injury time, but that was the only blot on an otherwise comfortable win for the Premier Division side.MR Onions: D O'Sullivan, M Davies, J Tindall, P Matthews, S O'Shaughnessy, E McInally, M Ward, R Lemmon (J Kelly, 54), F Benito, K Ronaldson, M Luber.
