Hornets in Khano SOS call
Dandy Town hope to pull off a major coup by persuading their ex-player Khano Smith to turn out for them in the first round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships.Hornets travel to Trinidad for their first leg match against Defence Force which will be played on March 9, with the return leg to be held at BAA Field on March 20.And the club’s hierarchy believe Smith’s professional experience would be a huge boost for the Town players who qualified for the Championships by winning last season’s Premier Division.Smith, 30, has been without a side since being released by New England Revolution two months ago and is currently coaching in the United States. He won the Premier Division title with his boyhood team Hornets in 2004 before moving to the MLS where he enjoyed a successful first spell at the Revolution, playing in successive cup finals.Should underdogs Hornets beat Defence Force then they would play either Milrock FC, of Guyana, or Suriname’s Intermoengotapoe SV in the second round in April.Defence Force are Trinidad’s most successful club and have produced top players such as Carlos Edwards, David Lawrence, Clayton Ince and Jason Scotland. The top three teams in the tournament will qualify for the 2011-12 Concacaf Champions League where they will meet sides from North America and Central America.Last March saw Devonshire Cougars travel to St. Vincent for their CFU Club Championships where they drew with hosts Avenues 2-2, before losing to Suriname’s Leo Victor 5-2 and Trinidad’s Joe Public 7-3.Back in the 1980s, PHC Zebras side took Bermuda football to dizzying heights by reaching the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Club Championships.Dandy Town are currently third in Premier Division.
