Rangers boost survival hopes

Devonshire Colts 0 Southampton Rangers 3Devonshire Colts appear doomed to be playing First Division football next season.Southampton Rangers on the other hand have given themselves a fighting chance at survival following their triumph at Police Field yesterday.Despite coming up against this season’s whipping boys, Rangers were slow to display any attacking flair and it took them until early in the second half to find their touch with Adrian Burrows scoring their first goal before substitute Travis Wilkinson and Dennis Russell followed up late on.The three points are a life-line for Rangers, although they will need to play with more quality if they are to escape the drop.Doomed Colts were lacklustre for the entire first half while Rangers weren’t much better despite being able to control much of the opening half only to watch as some good approach work broke down as they reached the penalty area. With both attacks breaking down time and time again the two goalkeepers were like innocent bystanders with neither Colts’ Greg Rose nor Rangers’ Jason Smith required to make a single save. But there were scoring opportunities with Rangers’ Khimo Harrison hitting a 24-yarder inches over Colts’ goal after 15 minutes and Colts striker Kyle Jones placing his angled shot wide of the far post from 15 yards after 23 minutes. The visitors were well in control for the rest of the half but their two big front men, Russell and Khalil Symonds, seemed out of touch and incapable of finishing with a direct shot on goal.Jones showed an appetite for scoring after when he fired a shot over the bar from 15 yards for Colts but Rangers’ skipper Jermaine Dill replied by heading a Travis Wilkinson corner inches wide of the post. The first shot on goal came from Colts after 63 minutes when Lazendro Symonds sent a blast which Rangers’ keeper Smith did well to dive full length to his right to save. With substitute Wilkinson making a great impact in the Rangers’ attack an opening goal always seemed imminent for the visitors and it came after 67 minutes when his great cross from the left found the head of a high jumping Adrian Burrows to smartly head home.Jones was to squander further chances for Colts afterwards before Wilkinson, who continued to rattle the defence with penetrating dribbling down the left flank, teamed up with Burrows and Russell a move that ended with Wilkinson scoring the second from 12 yards after 81 minutes. With the result now totally out of reach of Colts, Rangers were now inevitable winners _ the third goal coming from Russell two minutes from the end when he scored from close range.Devonshire Colts: G.Rose; E.Wilkin, C.Durham, M.Burch, Q.Jones; L.Symonds, J.Khan, J.Washington (M.Piper, 74 min); T.Foote, K.Jones, C.Trott (Z.Darrell, 74 min).Yellow card: K.JonesSouthampton Rangers: J.Smith; M.Williams, K.Simmons, D.Charles, K.Harrison; J.Caisey (T.Wilkinson, 55 min), J.Dill, J.Mallory; J.Charles (A.Burrows 35 min),K.Symonds (V.Perinchief, 57 min), D.Russell.Subs not used: E.Albouy, S.Perinchief.Yellow card: I.Mallory.Referee: S.AllenMan of the match: Travis Wilkinson (Rangers)
