Cougars’ captain Coddington predicts thriller

Devonshire Cougars’ skipper Domico Coddington is hoping for a thrilling match tonight when his side travels to Somerset Cricket Club to face St. George’s Colts in the Friendship semi final. The two teams have played some entertaining matches this term and look set for another one after they were drawn together. The winner will face North Village in the final.Coddington, who is in his first full season as skipper of the Big Cats, is expecting a fan friendly game with plenty of excitement and action.“We are preparing for the match like any other game, we don’t put any extra emphasis on certain game apart from doing what we know needs to be done,” said Coddington, whose team beat St. George’s in the FA Cup semi-final a fortnight ago.“We had a decent game on Sunday and it is good to go into a game like this with a win.“We are prepared for whatever comes our way.“Hopefully the game is one of those exciting games that the fans would like to see and maybe we can have a big crowd out to see the game,”Coddington has enjoyed his captaincy duties and will be looking to make another final this year.He said: “We are coming out to play out game really, play our type of football and get into another final this year.“Being captain has been like any other season I have had, I just have more responsibilities now.“I have to lead by example and when things aren’t going our way I personally fell I have to pick it up for the team to get them going if need be.“But that’s the main thing, I only want what’s best for the team and for everyone to play as a team.”The Friendship semi-final will be preceded by the second Shield semi-final between Hamilton Parish and BAA.The two sides have been involved in close encounters over the season, with both league clashes being settled by one goal, Parish winning both times.Goalkeeper Nigel Burgess wants his side to make the most of the chance to claim some sort of silverware this year with their league and promotion ambitions all but over.“We’re excited about potentially getting into a Shield final, we haven’t been in one for quite a few years and being the league is pretty much out of our hands we are looking forward to winning this competition,” said Burgess.“This would be a consolation for the club being our main aim was the league and promotion.”Looking upon his team’s fortunes this year in their league campaign, Burgess admitted the priority was to make a return back to the top flight. Not too down on the season as a whole, the former Bermuda Hogges net minder is hopeful his men can do what St. David’s did just last year.“We had a pretty up and down season, in beating Somerset Trojans and then dropping points against some of the teams around us, and hats off to the likes of X’Roads who are in the hunt for promotion as well as Young Men’s Social Club, but these are teams that we expected to beat,” he said.“Hopefully we can go through the same route St. David’s went, they won the Shield before getting promoted so we are looking to follow that same route.“We have played some close games with BAA, they have definitely stepped up a level and aren’t the team that they used to be.“They have good youngsters in their side, they are much more structured team and the odd goal has decided our games recently, so we expect it to be a fight.”Kick-off for the Shield match is 7pm, while the Friendship showdown will start at 9pm.
