Lightbourne recalls FA Cup glory
Ex-Stoke City striker Kyle Lightbourne had a magical knack of scoring goals in the FA Cup.He found the net 15 times in 22 games during his nine-year career, including one in three for the Potters, and was the first to score in the competition at Reading’s Madjeski Stadium. This weekend his former side will make their first ever appearance in the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. And, in true Lightbourne FA Cup tradition, he envisions them pulling the proverbial rabbit out of the hat by beating their much more fancied opponents.“I definitely wouldn’t be surprised if Stoke come away with a victory,” said Lightbourne, who made 112 Stoke appearances.“City are beatable, there’s no doubt about that. I really think Stoke can cause them problems.”On his own fine FA Cup history, Lightbourne remembers: “I always did pretty well in FA Cup games. I found out recently I scored 15 goals in 22 games. That’s not a bad strike rate is it? I can’t be too far behind Ian Rush in the all-time FA Cup scorers!”Lightbourne is unable to attend this weekend’s final but insists he will be cheering them on from his armchair, and may even be tempted to join in with a burst of Delilah the club’s popular anthem.“I’ll definitely to be for Stoke on Saturday; I didn’t score the goals I’d have liked but I still have some fond memories of my time there,” he said. “I started off slowly but I think the fans eventually appreciated my style of football.”Somewhat fittingly, considering his fine history in knockout football, Lightbourne’s proudest moment in a red and white-stripped shirt came in the Auto Windscreen Shield final in 2000, when Stoke beat Bristol City 2-1 at Wembley.Stoke’s one-time record signing fully expects a few memories of that career highlight to come flooding back to him when he watches Tony Pulis’ side run out at Wembley on Saturday.“It’s an amazing feeling to walk out at Wembley. The whole occasion, the whole building is just amazing. If I remember rightly the club also brought us some pretty nice suits!” said Lightbourne, who will play for Stoke in the Masters six-a-side tournament this summer.“It’s such a big occasion and I can only imagine what playing in the FA Cup is like.“Back then we were told Stoke had never lost at Wembley and since then they’ve only played there once when they beat Bolton in the play-offs. Hopefully they can keep that record intact.”One Bermudian striker who won’t be so keen to see Stoke lift their first major trophy in 39 years will be Lighbourne’s close friend, and former Bermuda team-mate, Shaun Goater. The former City marksman, who will be making the 3,500-mile journey to North London for the final, has already started ribbing Lightbourne about underdog Stoke’s chances.“He’s been giving me a little bit of banter,” laughs Lightbourne.“Village got the better of PHC in the Premier Division this season and Shaun said City are going to get the better of Stoke in the FA Cup. Hopefully Stoke can be me a favour so I can give some stick back!”
