Trott’s clangers hands Trojans victory

St George’s 1Somerset Trojans 4A disasterous goalkeepering performance from Eunico Trott gifted 10-man Somerset Trojans the points in a one-sided affair at Somerset Cricket Club last nightThe St George’s keeper was on the field for less than 30 minutes, but in that time he conceded three goals and any hope Colts might have had of winning disappeared long before he was substituted by Richard Todd with just 28 minutes gone.It took Somerset just five minutes to open the scoring when Jonathon Bean bagged his first following some poor decision making by Trott. Bean struck again nine minutes later in similar circumstances and St George’s were staring down the barrel at that point.Zahkie Iris scored his side third with less than 20 minutes gone and although he was sent off for a reckless tackle just four minutes later the damage had already been done.A shell-shocked St George’s, who came out flat and got worse, couldn’t find a way to get back into the game and it wasn’t until the 78 minute that Clay Darrell finally got the visiting team on the score sheet.Even then, Somerset still found time to have the last word when Dion Stovell’s goal eight minutes from time restored their three goal lead. The win propelled Somerset to fifth in the Digicel Premier Division, if only for 48 hours, with Southampton Rangers a point below them due to face Dandy Town at St John’s Field on Sunday.Town though can go level on points at the top of the league with North Village should they win. Rangers, who currently sit one point and one spot behind Town, can move into the top four with a win. With Robin Hood and Boulevard Blazers meeting at BAA Field tonight, and Village’s game with St David’s postponed due to the death of Landro Minors the game of the weekend will see second play third as Devonshire Cougars travel to Southampton to take on PHC.Cougars coach Dennis Brown insists that there is no pressure on his side to get a result despite their having have an opportunity to apply pressure on champions Village.“I’m not focused on the result, that comes after hard work in training and throughout the game,” said Brown. “I will emphasise to my team not to dwell on the result and to improve on our performance of our last match which was not too good overall.”Having played two more games than Village after the weekend, both sides could be right in the title race depending on the result.A Cougars win would see them three points clear at the top of the table while a Zebras win would create a three-way tie at the summit. Brown’s side would also go top if they came away with a draw. This early in the season, though, means that Brown is less concerned about table position and more interested in seeing how his side respond to the challenge that faces them.“There is no pressure on us but we know what is at stake and will look to improve our overall performance in this match,” said Brown. “I am a firm believer that defence wins championships and the team who defends better and executes their chances will win.”St George’s:E Trott (Z Hendrickson, 28) D Signor, E Signor, J Warren, J Darrell, G Wade, J Carlington, J Bassett, A Douglas, C Darrell, J Dickinson.
