Trojans set sights on Friendship final

Former Trojans boss Dennis Brown is now in charge of Devonshire Cougars. The two sides meet on Boxing Day in the semi-final of the Friendship Trophy.

Somerset Trojans coach Mike Corday believes his current crop of players have the ability to return the club to their former glory, starting on Boxing Day when they clash with Devonshire Cougars at Southampton Oval. The two clubs will lock horns in the first of two Friendship Trophy semi-finals, with the winner to meet either St David’s or North Village in the final at the National Sports Centre on New Year’s Day.For Corday’s side, who beat Dandy Town in the first round, the Christmas tournament brings a chance for them to turn the corner and re-establish themselves as a perennial force in the top-flight once again.“Making a final is important for the club and community because we haven’t been in the final of a major tournament in some time, but we have also told them that if they want to repair the legacy of the club that it starts here,” said Corday.“We have a chance to make a final and win one and in the end if we can do the job on Boxing Day then we will be one win away from a major cup victory.”Playing Cougars won’t be much different from playing Town, with both sides having the players to play an eye-catching brand of football, as well as grinding out results.Southampton Oval is a small pitch, a factor that could determine the match becoming a high octane affair.Going up against their former coach in Dennis Brown, there could be added incentive for Trojans making the final at the expense of Cougars.“We will be fine, we have everyone available for the match so we will be okay,” said Corday.“There won’t be much of a difference between Cougars and Dandy Town who we beat in the first round, they are a team that has the ability to play the ball and get stuck in so it sets up to be a good game.“We will approach them the same way we approached Town, stay solid and tight at the back and look to make the most of the chances we will get when they come.“The game is being played on a small pitch so it could benefit the fans in a sense that they will see a very entertaining game, but Dennis is a very organised coach, I have played and coached with him so it’s nothing we don’t know about.“I know what is needed to make the final, so let’s just hope that we show up.”Hamilton Parish will kick off the holiday festivities when they meet Young Men’s Social Club at Southampton Oval on Monday.Tuesday’s action will see X’Roads play Flanagan’s Onions, while North Village face St David’s with both matches to be played at Wellington Oval.Shield matches begin at 12pm, while Friendship Trophy games will be played at 2pm.
