Blazers pay tribute to founder Thompson

Richard Thompson left his mark on local football as president of the Bermuda Football Association for two years in the mid-1990s, but he left a legacy too as founding member and first president of Boulevard Community Club in 1973.Thompson, who headed the BFA after taking over as president from Charlie Marshall in 1994, died suddenly on Monday at the age of 66. He helped establish Boulevard in the BFA league and they went on to win many titles, including league, FA, Friendship and Martonmere Cup since the 1980s.“Richard was a good president and though he did not play football he was respected by his footballing peers,” said Elbert “Apples” Richardson, former president of the club. Also paying tribute to Thompson’s involvement with Boulevard yesterday was president Dr Lou Matthews who said: “The Boulevard family is extremely saddened by the loss of brother Thompson.“He was always a strong positive listening ear and helped to provide guidance in leadership for myself and others.“His contribution to football and the Pembroke community which he loved did not go unnoticed.“His leadership 40 years ago laid a foundation for hundreds of central Pembroke young men. He will be missed sorely by the Boulevard community.”
