Hapless Trojans crushed by Hornets

North Village striker Jahquan Smith-DeShields (front) holds off PHC’s Johnny Ball in the Dudley Eve at Goose Gosling Field last night.Village won the game 4-1.

Dandy Town 6 Somerset 1Ruthless Dandy Town smacked hapless Somerset Trojans for six to march into semi-finals of the Dudley Eve at Goose Gosling Field.Trojans, the defending champions, simply had no answer to Hornets’ onslaught and have now conceded a worrying ten goals in their opening two games of the season. The West Enders fell behind as early as the fifth minute when skipper Brandon Minors, who impressed at the heart of Town’s backline, powered a header past goalkeeper Shaquille Bean,Trojans did manage to claw their way back on level terms on 16 minutes, though, when Sean Brangman let fly with a strike from distance which nestled in the bottom corner. But parity didn’t last long in this game as Hornets midfielder Seion Darrell finished from close range after Damon Ming’s shot had been parried by keeper Bean.It took until the 67th minute for Hornets to extend their lead, following a mistake by keeper Bean who allowed a weak effort from Ming to squirm under his body, presenting the winger with the simple task of tapping into an empty net. When Fabian Frankson guided a header into the top corner from a Ming cross for his side’s fourth goal, it seemed as though the final whistle couldn’t come soon enough for a dejected looking Trojans, who looked disjoined and slightly disinterested by this point.By now Hornets were cutting through Trojans non-existent defence with ease, and it was no surprise when Skyah Furbert added another with a first-time shot from the edge of the box after some clever work down the right by Ming.Hornets twice hit the woodwork in quick succession, through Frankson and Ming, but made it six when Trojans keeper Bean was robbed while inexplicably trying the dribble the ball into the Hornets half by Terrence Webb who kept a cool head to chip the ball into the vacant.North Village 4PHC 1North Village scored four second half goals to beat PHC at Goose Gosling Field and advance to the semi-finals of the Dudley Eve as group winners.A Keishen Bean brace and goals from Jemeiko Jennings and Jason Lee secured the victory, while Marco Piper was on target for PHC.After a first half stalemate, Village skipper Jennings opened the scoring in the 49th minute when he latched onto a long ball, beating his marker for pace, before slotting home past PHC goalkeeper Raymond Glasford.Village doubled their lead six minutes later through Bean who tucked his shot past Glasford who had horribly misjudged a bouncing ball.PHC midfielder Jevon Sealey then conceded a penalty after bringing down Jahquan Smith-Deshields in the 82nd minute, with Bean stepping up to send Glasford the wrong way for his second of the game.PHC did manage a consolation goal in injury time when a driven cross into the Village area from Shaki Smith was met by Marco Piper to finish from close range. However, fit-again Lee put the final nail in PHC’s coffin just before the final whistle, ghosting unmarked at the back post for Village’s fourth.“I thought we played well and worked hard, that has been our motto all preseason and we came out looking to up the tempo tonight as a team,” said Village boss Ralph Bean.“Every competition you enter you look to win, so the mindset was just that from the beginning, we are into the semis and we will see who we play next and go from there.“We want to advance as far as we can. Jason coming back from injury is always a plus, any good player that returns or comes into your set-up is a good thing so it was good to see him get among the goals and the game itself.”
