Cougars on course for a fourth title

Devonshire Cougars 2North Village 1Devonshire Cougars will contest their fourth successive title after beating ten-men North Village at Somerset Cricket Club in the second Dudley Eve semi-final today.Jesse Seymour scored the winner in the 87th minute after Tyrell Burgess’s 39th-minute strike cancelled out Drewonde Bascome’s goal in the 24th.Burgess was sent off for two bookable offences.“It is always good to make it to a final. We won the Triple Crown last year and if we can get this cup then we will have all of the titles at the same time,” said Cougars skipper Chris Caisey jr.“There is one more game left and it is a final so anything can happen and we will be ready for it.”Knowing that Dandy Town were the first team to book their ticket into next month’s final, the stage was set for the two city rivals to do battle.Bascome put Cougars ahead when he capitalised on a defensive lapse deep inside Village territory. He then got chance to double the lead but his strike from just inside the area cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and came back into play, much to the relief of Rams ‘keeper Troy Hall jr.The missed opportunity was punished courtesy of Burgess when he hit a thunderous strike from 25 yards that left Daniel Johnson clutching at straws in the Cougars goal.Minutes later, Burgess was carded for a challenge on Domico Coddington that proved devastating to his side in the later moments of the match.Haven already been booked, and since talked to by referee Ronue Cann for his tackles after his booking, Burgess was given the red card in the 72nd minute for another tackle on Coddington as he surged deep into Village’s attacking third. To their credit, Village continued to press for the all important goal that could have been the winner.Their demise, however, was been sealed by a foul on Coddington by defender Sean Fubler, who was having a good game until he clipped the winger’s foot just inside the area.Bascome again got chance to put his name on the scoresheet but his tame penalty effort was saved by Hall. But while making the save, Hall could only parry the shot into the path of Seymour who slotted home from six yards to end the tie and send his side into the Remembrance Day final.“They played well and credit to them but going down a man is difficult for any team and we just needed to take our time and execute.“It was never going to be an easy game but if you stick to your game plan as a team than to will always be in the match.”Devonshire Cougars: D Johnson, J Seymour, D Cox, K Franks, Z White, P Parsons, M Steede (Z Iris, 67), K Steede, D Coddington, D Bascome, C Caisey (K Tucker, 75)Subs not used: M Battersbee, R Nesbitt, M Steede, K TrottGoals: D Bascome, 24, J Seymour, 87Yellow: P Parsons, K TuckerNorth Village: T Hall, S Fubler, P Castle, D Tankard, T Watson, J Jennings, P Smith (J Smith-Deshields, 63), J Lee(T Walker, 82), K Bean, T Burgess, J DavisSubs not used: M Paynter, D Grant, K Dill, D Chambers, D HuntGoals: T Burgess,39Yellow: J Davis, T BurgessRed: T BurgessReferee: R CannMan of the Match: D Coddington
