Coddington goal enough for Cougars

Devonshire Cougars 1

North Village 0

Domico Coddington’s first-half strike was the difference between Devonshire Cougars and North Village last night as Cougars advanced in the Friendship Trophy.

Defending champions Cougars were ahead in the 23rd minute after skipper Chris Caisey Jr found Coddington in a promising position on the right flank from his midfield role.

The pacy winger, with a lot left to do, fired his effort inside Troy Hall jr’s far post for the only goal.

Rams’ captain Jemeiko Jennings was subdued for large parts of the game and even a late push from their influential leader wasn’t enough to win the match.

Kwame Steede had a chance to double the hosts’ lead, but a linesman’s flag denied him a well deserved goal for his endeavours.

Jennings, however, would have a chance to salvage something for his side but Daniel Johnson made an outstanding save.

“Every cup match is important and we wanted to win and move on, which the objective in these games,” said Caisey.

Eagles won 4-3 on penalties

Somerset Eagles advanced in the First Division Shield competition with a penalty shoot-out win over Young Men’s Social Club.

Marcus Simmons gave Eagles the lead in the 15th minute only to see Khiry Easton equalise for Social Club midway through the second-half.

Neither side could be split after 120 minutes, resulting in the men from the west end advancing to the next round.

Friendship and Shield action continues tomorrow with a double-header at St John’s Field.

Dandy Town will begin their quest for silverware when they host Wolves at 2.30pm, while Boulevard entertain X’Roads at the same venue.
