Team-mate pleads with Wells to stay put

Wells is a wanted man and his team-mates at Bradford know it

Defender Andrew Davies believes team-mate Nahki Wells can achieve his ambitions at Bradford City.

The Bermuda striker, who is leading Bradford’s scoring this season with 14 goals, is again the subject of transfer speculation heading into the January transfer window, with Championship clubs rumoured to be interested in the player.

Yesterday, Davies, in his column in the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, urged Wells to stick with the club.

Davies said that he understood the Bermuda player wanting to test himself at a higher level. However, he believes Wells, whose existing contract runs until the summer of 2015, can still achieve his ambitions by staying at Valley Parade.

“I don’t think he needs to go anywhere now,” Davies said. “The fans love him, the gaffer [Phil Parkinson] loves him and the lads really like him. “Nahki is only 23 and his big moves and his money will come. Keep scoring goals and it doesn’t matter what team or division he’s at, clubs will be interested.

“I hear people are talking about a £3?million price tag for him, but that will shoot up to £5?million or £6?million if he keeps scoring goals and we move up to the Championship.”

Julian Rhodes, Bradford’s joint chairman, has already admitted that City have to prepare for “all eventualities” with Wells, who has given no indication that he will follow strike partner James Hanson’s lead in committing to a long-term deal.

Despite being sidelined for almost a month with an ankle injury, Wells is almost halfway towards his pre-season target of 30 goals in this campaign.

“You look at Dwight Gayle, who went from Dagenham to Crystal Palace for £6?million rising to £8?million. I’ve played against them both and I don’t think he can lace Nahki’s boots,” Davies said.

Starting with the winner at home to Northampton Town on April 6, Wells has netted 22 times in his past 25 appearances for Bradford. His scoring run has not gone unnoticed by teams in higher divisions and the Sky Bet League One club accept that they will have a fight on their hands trying to keep him for the rest of the season, if not beyond.

“If Bradford want to keep moving forward, you need to keep your best players and Nahki is certainly one of them,” Davies said. “In an ideal world, I’d do whatever it takes to keep him and I’m sure the manager and the two chairmen will do their best for the club and try to do that.

“If we can add a couple of players in January instead of selling, I believe that we can go up again this year.

“Nahki’s scoring, Hans [Hanson] will get goals and I think we can have a real go. But we are going to struggle to replace Nahki Wells if he leaves. He would be a massive loss to the team.”
