Dandy Town and Devonshire Cougars renew their rivalry on Sunday with a place in the Friendship Trophy semi-finals at stake.

The Premier Division title rivals put on an exciting match last Friday night at the Devonshire Recreation Club, with honours being shared in a six-goal thriller.

Fast forward nine days and the pair will take to the field again, this time at St John’s Field, with a spot in the last four up for grabs.

Town coach Jomar Wilkinson expects another entertaining game. “We always know that both sides will come out and look to play football, look to score goals and if you’re not careful you will get buried,” he said.

“If we can stick to our game plan, then we can get a good result as the match is at home.

“The fans will be in store for another exciting match. Last weekend was great for the fans and players to be involved, so hopefully it will be another good game.

“Two quality teams that try and play the game the right way is always pleasing, so let’s hope the game is played in the same good spirit as last week’s.”

Both clubs have produced memorable games in recent history, many of which have involved cup finals, including the Friendship Trophy final last season, which Cougars won on penalties.

Town returned the favour this season with a penalty shoot-out win over Cougars in the Dudley Eve Trophy final, ending their quest to become the first team to hold all four leading domestic trophies.

Wilkinson believes that the rivalry between the two teams is healthy for the domestic game.

“The rivalry is good for the local game,” he said. “This is what people want to see when they come out — healthy competition — and when you look at how we tend to play each other in finals, something has to give.”

Dennis Brown, the Cougars’ coach, has placed the onus on his side to take the game to Town from the opening whistle.

“This match isn’t any different from any other game we play, against them or anyone else,” Brown said. “What I can say is that it’s a cup game, we are the champions, so the onus is on us to go out and get the result.

“In games like this, you snooze, you lose, so we must be ready.”

In Sunday’s other quarter-finals, Somerset Trojans take on PHC at Somerset Cricket Club, Flanagan’s Onions face St David’s at Goose Gosling Field and Southampton Rangers are home to Hamilton Parish.

Straight down the middle: Neil Higgins, of Hi5Golf Club of Canada, helped his team into a strong lead position at the halfway stage of the Goodwill Tournament at Tucker’s Point yesterday.
