Wolves moved into a two-way tie for first place with Boulevard after a late winner last night at Devonshire Recreation Club gave them a 1-0 win over St David’s in a clash of last season’s relegated teams.

The teams looked headed for a share of the points before Kyle Brangman converted a low cross from the right by Sergio Richardson in the 89th minute to seal all three points and lift Wolves into second place on goal difference.

The promotion race is once again promising to be an interesting one with Boulevard the team in pole position at the moment as the only team in the division with maximum points from three matches.

Boulevard have fallen on hard times since finishing runners up in the Premier Division as recently as 2008-09, the same season they won the FA Cup.

They were relegated in 2012 but now there are encouraging signs for the back-of-town club this season with promotion their main objective.

Tomorrow they host fifth-placed X-Roads at Police Field aiming to consolidate their spot at the top. Tiae-Vince Douglas and Dunn-ya Taylor, their captain, are two of the leading scorers in the division, with five and four goals respectively, and coach Aaron Williams is encouraged by what he sees.

“I’m a firm advocate for respect and communication and I try to bring that into the team,” Williams said. “I try to keep the team very humble, I don’t want them to get too excited.

“We take one game at a time; that’s our motto for the season. The way it is looking now, we seem to be in a very good position. The chemistry right now is awesome. It is all about how we go about talking to one another.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better start and I have no complaints with these guys. Everything I’ve asked they’ve done it.”

X-Roads and Devonshire Colts are determined to have a successful promotion run this season after just failing last season and already they are among the early contenders.

“X-Roads are definitely one of the teams in the league we have to keep an eye on,” Williams said.

Devonshire Colts, who trail Boulevard by two points, meet Ireland Island Rangers at Malabar Field, looking for the opportunity to take over first place, while Young Men’s Social Club, fourth, take on Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field and BAA Wanderers play at home to Paget.
