Promotion chasers without banned top scorers

Out of action: the suspended Darrell and Thompson will miss tomorrow’s First Division game (Photograph by Lawrence Trott)

Promotion-seeking Young Men’s Social Club and St George’s will be without their top scorers tomorrow because of one-match suspensions following recent bookings.

Clay Darrell, of leaders Social Club, and Donavan Thompson of St George’s will sit out their team’s matches against Southampton Rangers and Wolves respectively after picking up yellow cards in the FA Cup two weeks ago.

Darrell was booked in his team’s loss to Devonshire Cougars while Thompson received a caution at Police Field, where his four goals helped St George’s thrash Boulevard 6-2. He was booked after taking off his shirt to celebrate his hat-trick.

Social Club, aiming to return to the top flight after an absence of 36 years, lead the First Division standings by a point over X-Roads and nine ahead of St George’s and St David’s in third and fourth. Social Club, the only unbeaten team in the division, meet Rangers, who are fifth and ten points behind the leaders. Victory for Social Club and X-Roads would leave Rangers with a huge gap to close.

St George’s will miss Thompson against a Wolves team that has managed just two wins in the league this season, one of them against St George’s back in October. They sit third from the bottom in what they had hoped would be a promotion-seeking season.

St David’s will lose some ground on the top three as their match with BAA, which was originally scheduled for tonight and then put back to Sunday, has been postponed.

X-Roads take on Hamilton Parish at Wellington Oval, looking for another three points to keep alive their hopes of a first promotion to the Premier Division. They beat Devonshire Colts in the FA Cup and will meet another struggling team, Dandy Town, in the quarter-finals in March.

Paget play Ireland Rangers at Southampton Oval in Sunday’s other First Division match.
