Seventh goal of the season: Reggie Lambe

Reggie Lambe was on target as Carlisle United ended their seven-match winless run with a 2-0 victory away to Yeovil Town in the Sky Bet League Two today.

The Bermuda winger scored his seventh goal of the season in the 55th minute to increase Carlisle’s lead and breathe fresh life in the Cumbrians’ play-off hopes.

Lambe celebrated his goal by stuffing the ball up his jersey and sucking his thumb, with the Carlisle Twitter page later revealing the player and his partner, Keiche, are expecting a baby in September.

The much-needed win lifts Keith Curle’s side, who had lost six of their previous seven games, to sixth in the table.

John O’Sullivan gave the visiting side an early advantage against Yeovil who had midfielder Ben Whitfield sent off for a straight red card in the 54th minute.

O’Sullivan broke a goal drought for Carlisle that had stretched to 701 minutes at the point he found the net in the sixteenth minute, heading a quickly taken Danny Grainger free-kick past goalkeeper Artur Krysiak.

The home side struggled to respond, not creating any chances of note until just before half-time as Tom Eaves headed a cross just wide.

Yeovil’s task was made even harder on 53 minutes when Whitfield appeared to elbow Tom Miller and referee Trevor Kettle immediately sent off the Bournemouth loanee.

Carlisle wasted no time in making their one-man advantage count as Lambe was played in behind a minute later and although Krysiak saved his first effort, he turned it in at the second attempt.

Meanwhile Nahki Wells’s Huddersfield Town suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Burton Albion in the Championship. Wells started on the bench and replaced midfielder Jack Payne in the 55th minute.

Substitute Jackson Irvine scored an injury-time goal as Burton boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation.

David Wagner’s Huddersfield, who remain third in the table, dominated possession but were unable to break down a determined Burton defence.

Wagner said: “It’s disappointing, not just because of the result but because of our performance, especially with the ball and in the final third.

“We showed a lack of quality and we have made too many wrong decisions.

“Against a difficult opponent an early goal would have helped. In the end we gave them a few counter-attacks and they have scored. The players tried everything.”

Rai Simons’s Chesterfield earned a 0-0 draw away to second-place Bolton Wanderers in League One.

Simons, the Bermuda forward, came on as a second-half substitute in the 80th minute for striker Kristian Dennis.

The result preserves Chesterfield’s slim chances of beating the drop, with Gary Caldwell’s side 23rd in the table.
