Robinson wants another strong show
Bermuda Under-17 women’s coach Naquita Robinson praised her team after Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over hosts St Lucia, and will be looking for another strong performance this evening when they take on Antigua and Barbuda in their second group C match at the Concacaf Caribbean qualifiers.
All the Bermuda goals came in the first half, where an own goal broke the deadlock before LeiLanni Nesbeth and Jaden Masters added to the score.
“The team performed well enough to get the result we needed,” Robinson said yesterday. “We gave the ball away in critical parts of the field which led to St Lucia attacks. Our defence and goalkeeper did their jobs really well to keep a clean sheet. LeiLanni played well at times but lacked the discipline to stay in a more forward position where she is most effective. However, she created quite a few chances which we should have capitalised on.
“Jaden and Nia Christopher found themselves in front of goal on a few occasions and either chose to pass or shot off target. I’m disappointed we didn’t add to the tally, yes, because St Lucia had opportunities.
“Also because we had so many opportunities that we wasted. However, first game nerves will always play a part. The girls started off slow but gained momentum as the game progressed. I have to applaud St Lucia as they never gave up fighting.”
Robinson predicted beforehand that Bermuda would win the group and will be looking for good performances against Antigua and Barbuda today and Aruba on Saturday, although she stressed there is still room for improvement from her players. Antigua and Barbuda edged Aruba 2-1 in their opening match on Tuesday.
“Antigua scored off two goalkeeping errors,” Robinson said. “Aruba like to shoot from outside the box and had a few shots been on target the score would have been different. Technically, Bermuda are superior to the other teams in this group — however, some of our players are a bit passive and allowed St Lucia to physically dominate us.
“I’m sure the other two teams will attempt to do the same.”
