No serious offers for Wells, says Wagner
Huddersfield Town have yet to receive any serious offers for Nahki Wells, with the summer transfer deadline less than a week away.
The striker’s prospects of remaining at the club look increasingly in doubt after head coach David Wagner said he had “an honest conversation” with the Bermuda forward over his future.
Sky Bet Championship sides Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United are understood to be keen on signing the striker, who is in the final year of his contract, with Wagner open to any serious bids.
However, as of yesterday, the German said that the Premier League club have still received no serious offers for Wells, who is available for transfer before the window closes next Thursday.
Wells was a key part in Huddersfield’s promotion from the Championship last season, but has fallen down the pecking order at the John Smith’s Stadium after the arrival of record signing Steve Mounié and Laurent Depoitre.
The Bermudian recently had surgery for an ankle injury that has kept him sidelined since the preseason.
Wells, who is the last ten months of a 4½-year deal, rejected a new offer from Huddersfield last season.
Huddersfield have made a fantastic start to their first Premier League season, in Wells’s absence, sitting second in the table after winning their first two games.
The West Yorkshire club edged Rotherham United, of Sky Bet League One, 2-1 in the Carabao Cup at home on Wednesday and will meet Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, whom they beat 3-0 in their season opener, at Selhurst Park in the third round.
Wells earned a runner’s-up medal in the competition with then League Two side Bradford City, who lost to Premier League opponents Swansea City 5-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium during the 2012-13 season.
The Bermuda striker, previously the club’s record signing at £1.3 million from Bradford in January 2014, scored ten goals in 47 appearances last season and has netted 49 in 153 games overall for Huddersfield.
As well as Wolves and Leeds, Hull City, Birmingham City, Reading and Burnley are understood to be keeping tabs on Wells, who is valued at about £10 million. Huddersfield are at home to Southampton in the Premier League tomorrow.
