Nahki Wells hopes his goal in Queens Park Rangers’ victory over Portsmouth in an FA Cup fourth-round replay on Tuesday is the beginning of another prolific spell.

The Bermuda striker netted his side’s opener in their 2-0 win against the Sky Bet League One side before Matt Smith increased the West London side’s advantage.

Wells broke the deadlock in the 70th minute after bundling in Smith’s headed knockdown from a corner.

“I was just lucky to be at the right place at the right time and get the crucial touch that gave us the platform to go and get a second and win the game,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“This goal gives me something to build on going into the weekend. I’m feeling more than capable to go on and score against Birmingham City [in the Championship]. I’m working my socks off and feel I’m contributing and doing well. I’ll just keep my head down; I’m sure I’ll get another nice run.”

QPR’s win over Portsmouth was their first in the FA Cup fourth round in 22 years and also ended a five-game winless streak.

“It was a typical FA Cup tie where two sides went for it,” said Wells, who also scored in the initial tie, at Fratton Park on January 26, which ended 1-1.

“Credit to Portsmouth; they were a good side and hard to break down in both legs, especially at Fratton Park.

“They were resilient for the first 70 minutes [at Loftus Road] and we were able to break them down.”

Steve McClaren’s team will now meet Premier League side Watford in the next round on February 15 in a tie that will be televised.

“This is a brilliant tie to be in against a Premier League side on television, so it gives us something to really look forward to,” Wells said. “The next big one for us is Birmingham on the weekend. Hopefully we can take the confidence and the momentum into that fixture and try and go on a run again.”

Wells has scored eight goals in all competitions this season since joining QPR on a season-long loan from Burnley.
