Michael Findlay far from content with stalemate

In his first match in charge, Bermuda football coach Michael Findlay expressed his discontent with the 0-0 draw against French Guiana in their opening Concacaf Nations League fixture at the Flora Duffy Stadium.

Findlay’s side could not use home advantage to the fullest, as they dropped two points in a game where they were considered favourites.

The team leaves today for the second League B group C encounter away to St Vincent & the Grenadines on Tuesday.

“I wouldn’t say I am a happy man,” Findlay said. “I am pleased with the performance, pleased with the application and pleased with the commitment after, but I am not pleased with the result.

“We had opportunities to win the game, but there were opportunities for them also, so we have to be honest about it.

“In terms of the first steps, I’m happy enough that we got a point and we move on to St Vincent & the Grenadines.

“We’ve got some very tough travel challenges ahead, so we’ll get as prepared as possible and look for the next result.

“In the next game, I want the team to be a little more clinical in the final third. I also would like to see more intent in our build-up phase.

“We did not get enough movement in midfield to continue on a more consistent basis.

“We need to work on our dead-ball situations, we’ve got to understand our roles, understand each other and make sure we meet our responsibilities.”

Despite having to settle for a share of the spoils, Findlay was pleased to see a large home crowd of slightly more than 700 spectators turn out.

“It was enjoyable, really nice to see a good crowd,” added the head coach, who concedes it will take some time to implement what he wants from his players.

“What I liked is that the things we talked about in the very short space of time, the players applied themselves and tried to meet those standards and look to do the right things which we’ve been encouraging them from the start.

“There is no doubt that I want to operate with the ball in our possession, but we need to build from now.

“We have to have objectives and we have to continue to try to apply that and it’s going to take some time, but there were really positive signs of that.”

The coach made four changes during the match, with all coming after the hour mark.

“First of all we needed a few fresh legs,” Findlay said.

“Luke Robinson did a lot of work in the first-half, so we wanted to make a change there.

“We wanted to get Reggie Lambe into the game at a point where we thought he could bring some influence when the opposition was tiring. He showed exactly when he came on why he is the most capped player for Bermuda.

“It was about getting this youth into our team, some of the talent, some of this potential, the speed, the qualities. That’s what motivated us to use our subs, we’re here to build and this is about the future.”

Dale Eve captained the side, with the coach indicating that the 28-year-old Alvechurch goalkeeper displayed some leadership qualities in the build-up to the match.

“Dale was given the captaincy because he showed a great amount of maturity and experience with these players this week,” Findlay added. “He’s been here a long time and we knew at that point that he could bring that type of influence on the team.

“Going forward right now, we’ve established leadership groups, we speak on an ongoing basis and we’ll see what happens the next game. It may still be Dale but it might be somebody else.”

For Findlay, there is just not enough time to make much adjustments ahead of the next match.

“This competition presents some major challenges when it comes to travel for all the teams in Concacaf,” he said. “We’ll do a lot of post-match discussions, we’ll talk to them but really right now we’re trying to regenerate them and get them ready to play in St Vincent & the Grenadines on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Jean-Claude Darcheville, the Guiana coach was content with a point away before they meet Belize at home on Tuesday.

“If my team had played better we could have collected three points today,” Darcheville said.

“A 0-0 draw is good, for me it’s good because we play on Tuesday against Belize and if we win then today is a good point.

“I think my team can play better, today my team didn’t play very well. Today was the first match. I think Tuesday we’ll play better.”
