Nahki Wells fit and waiting for his chance at Bristol City

Nahki Wells is hoping to regain his place in Bristol City’s starting XI at the earliest opportunity after recently returning from injury.

The Bermudian striker has made five appearances since making his comeback after two months out with an ankle injury but four of those have been as a substitute.

“I’m happy to be back among it and happy to be fully fit,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“I’m just biding my time and making appearances here and there whilst trying to be ready to make an impact and be prepared for when the opportunity comes.”

Wells had scored three goals in thirteen appearances before picking up his injury in City’s 2-1 loss away to Leeds United in October.

The 33-year-old made his return as a substitute in City’s 3-2 win at home to Hull City on December 22 and was handed his first start in a goalless draw at Birmingham City a week later.

“I got 45 minutes against Birmingham, which was good,” Wells added.

“I had to be restricted to 45 minutes that day because it was my first real reintroduction, but it felt good and my body feels great despite having to deal with a slight tweak of how my ankle feels, having to strap it up and things like that.

“Tommy Conway is in front of me right now and he is playing well and has been scoring goals. In football you have to be ready and focused to make an impact off the bench, try to take the small opportunities when they come and be ready for when I get the nod to start a game.

“I have been here before so I just have to do what’s right and the tide will change and the cream will rise to the top.”

Wells came on as an 81st-minute substitute for Scottish striker Conway, who scored City’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Premier League side West Ham United in an Emirates FA Cup third round clash at London Stadium on Sunday. The replay takes place at Ashton Gate next Tuesday.

“We are in a great place right now and credit to all the players and the manager,” Wells said. “It was a great result.

“I thought we could’ve nicked it in the end and it was good to come on and be among it for the final ten minutes of the game.

“We earned ourselves a replay back at the Gate and hopefully we can put a march and a run together for the second half of the season to get ourselves in the play-off places.”
