Dates and venue announced for Games triathlon

Bermuda’s top triathlete, Tyler Butterfield, along with the world’s other leading competitors, have been given the dates and the course for next year’s London Olympic Games.Based in Colorado, where he continues his training, Butterfield has planned a number of events this year as he attempts to qualify for the Games. The Bermudian, who has been suffering from shin splits, will be hoping to get fully fit for the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series which will be held on the Olympic course on August 6-7 this summer. That event will serve as a key Olympic qualifier for many National Federations. With 500 days remaining until the start of the Olympics, the International Triathlon Union yesterday confirmed exactly when and where the event would be held. For the first time, the triathlon competition will be spread over more than two days. The women’s race will be part of a ‘Super Saturday’, on August 4, and the men’s race will follow three days later on Tuesday, August 7.In the previous three Olympics since the sport debuted in Sydney, 2000, the men’s and women’s medals have been decided on consecutive days. With no heats or preliminaries, the women’s battle for the medals will start at 9 am while the men’s will start slightly later at 11:30 am.Hyde Park in Central London will host the main triathlon venue with the swim to be contested in The Serpentine. The bike route will pass several major London landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Wellington Arch, Hyde Park Corner and Constitution Hill and back into Hyde Park, where the athletes will finish on the run.“We are extremely excited to showcase our sport in central London. Unlike many other sports that set inside an arena, the city of London itself will become the competition venue and serve as the backdrop for spectacular triathlon action,” said Marisol Casado, ITU President and IOC Member.Ticket prices will start at 20 UK pounds but parts of the bike route around Hyde Park will be free for spectators along the streets.Applications for Olympic Games tickets will open on March 15 and close on April 26, 2011 and can be accepted through the official London website.Meanwhile, Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) have announced that Cartan Tours have been appointed to serve as their Official Games Travel Company and Authorised Ticket Reseller (ATR) for the Games.“We are extremely pleased to be associated with Cartan Tours as our official agent for the 2012 Olympic Games,” said Judy Simons, BOA President.“Cartan is very well known and respected within the Olympic movement and they bring years of experience in handling both travel packages and ticket sales at the Olympic Games.”In its capacity as the Official ATR, Cartan will manage the ticketing allocations for Bermuda in relation to the London Games as well as offer travel packages, including pre and post travel throughout Europe.Cartan, who will be partnering with Bermuda’s travel company C Travel Co.
