Henri Schoeman knows he has “a target on my back” for the MS Amlin World Triathlon Bermuda elite men’s race in Hamilton tomorrow.

The South African won the first event of the series in Abu Dhabi eight weeks ago, beating two-times world champion Mario Mola, from Spain, into the second place. He followed that by winning gold at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, at the start of this month.

“I’ve definitely got a target on my back,” he said. “I feel the pressure, but I came here knowing that I just want to give it my best shot, just like I take every other race. Give it 100 per cent and whatever happens happens, but of course I’m going for the win.

“I’m in great shape, so all those things are in my favour and I’m very confident. It’s a tough course that I really enjoy. It’s to my advantage, I reckon.”

Schoeman also said he was keen to lap up the “island vibes” and is clearly intrigued by the course.

“I’m really excited to be here in Bermuda, I always like island vibes,” the 26-year-old said. “With a tough course, it’s very interesting.

”I’ve been to Bahamas, been to Cozumel [Mexico]. It’s relaxed and I really enjoy that.

“I’ve had a look at Corkscrew Hill and where we’re cycling on the back of Front Street and on Front Street itself and a little bit of the technical sections. I’ve had a good look at it and I think it should be a good race.”

Vincent Luis, the Frenchman who finished third in Abu Dhabi, said the forecast rain will not bother him.

“I’m living in the north of France, so I’m used to both rain and sun,” he said. “Rotterdam [for the Grand Final last year] was pretty nice for me. I’m not hoping for a rain race, because I have to be ready for every type of racing. It doesn’t matter to me, it just matters to the others.”
