Mixed fortunes for squash teams
Bermuda men's and women's teams endured mixed fortunes at the Pan American Squash Championships in Cayman Islands.
Micah Franklin and Noah Browne lost their Men's Division match against Guatemala on the final day on Saturday morning.
Franklin was defeated 13-11, 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 7-11 by Alejandro Enrique before Browne was beaten by Edwin Enriquez 9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 6-11.
In the afternoon Bermuda lost 2-0 to Chile, with Franklin going down in a five-set thriller 11-7, 11-13, 11-8, 5-11, 11-19 to Maximiliano Camiroaga, and Browne losing 11-9, 11-4, 11-8 to Jaime Pinto.
In the Women's Division, Bermuda were defeated 2-0 by home nation Cayman Islands in the morning before beating Barbados 2-0 in the afternoon.
Against Cayman, Laura Robinson went down 11-6, 11-6, 11-3 to Samantha Hennings, and Emma Keane lost 11-3, 11-4, 11-7 to Marlene West. Robinson then beat Sumairaa Suleman, of Barbados, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7 before her team-mate Jada Smith-Padmore lost to Keane 13-11, 8-11, 8-11, 5-11.
On Thursday the island's women's team lost 2-0 to Mexico, with Keane losing 11-4, 11-4, 11-7 to Samantha Teran, while Furtado lost 11-1, 11-0, 11-1 to Diana Garcia. Also on Thursday the men's team lost 2-0 to Argentina, with Browne going down 11-3, 11-7, 11-9 to Robertino Pezzota and Nick Kyme losing 14-12, 11-4, 11-1 to Gonzalo Miranda.
The men's team bounced back with a 2-0 win over British Virgin Islands on Friday. Browne beat Joe Chapman 11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 11-7, while Franklin defeated Mike Adamson 11-3, 11-3, 11-0.
Bermuda's women were also victorious on Friday with a 2-1 win over Guatemala.
Keane lost to Winifer Bonilla 11-3, 11-2, 11-1, Laura Robinson won 6-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-6, 11-7 over Maria Fernanda Pinot and Furtado beat Dayana Cardona 8-11, 13-11, 15-13, 10-12, 11-9 in the deciding game.
