Butterfield breaks his marathon record

Tyler Butterfield, left, competed in Japan alongside his close friend Brad Kahlefeldt of Australia

Tyler Butterfield shattered his own national marathon record at the Lake Biwa Marathon in Otsu, Shiga, Japan, at the weekend.

Butterfield time of 2hr 21min 47sec bettered his previous best of of 2:26:29 in hot and humid condition at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, last April.

The 36-year-old finished the Lake Biwa Marathon, which has IAAF Gold Label status, in 60th position, 13:55 behind race winner Salah Eddine Bounasr, of Morocco, who set a personal best of 2:07:52.

“I tried to make the most of the opportunity and went out faster than planned, but as they say — when in Rome,” Butterfield wrote on Instagram.

“I knew 2:22 would be a great day, but dream day would have been 2:20 and training has had a few dreaming days.”

“So went out with a great group of guys and hung on as long as I could, as the group got smaller. I am very happy with my time and been a great project for the start of the year.”
