Yearwood takes silver as swimmers end on a high

Ashley Yearwood ended the 2011 Caribbean Swimming Championships in fine style with a silver medal in the 50 metres butterfly on the final day of the event in Puerto Rico.Yearwood enjoyed a comfortable morning heat to reach the final, while sister Nicole got into the final of the 100 metres freestyle.After a fine start, Ashley held the lead up to the last five metres only to see the gold medal slip through her hands.She finished with a time 29.50 seconds, which is a new age group record, and a tie for second place.Also competing on the final day was Jesse Washington, who swam in his first long course race in the morning and nearly got under five minutes in the 400 metres freestyle event.Nicole Yearwood swam a personal best time in the 100 backstroke to finish sixth.Nick Patterson dropped two tenths of a second off his time and qualified for World Youth and Youth Commonwealth Games in the 50 metres butterfly.The team, led by veteran swimmer Lisa Blackburn who captured four medals, left a good impression on many countries, according to national coach Ben Smith, while also reaching standards for future meets around the world.“I am extremely proud of this team who performed very well over the six days of the meet and showed what hard work can produce from some of Bermuda’s best athletes,” said Smith. “This team got along well, prepared well and performed well.“Now it is back to preparation for Nick and Ashley as they get ready for Peru in August.“Jesse will be getting ready for the upcoming season that should be a busy one for his rising talent, while Rebecca will be preparing for her upcoming season at USC.“Nicole will be on a slight break from swimming due to her starting university without a swim programme.“Lisa will be back to the hard training as she prepares for Canadian Nationals and puts together her plan for the final push for London (Olympics).”
