Washington captures fourth swim gold

Jesse Washington captured a fourth gold medal in record time at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Bahamas.The Sandys Middle School student broke his own national record of 59.55 by two seconds en route to winning the 11-12 boys 100 metre freestyle final.His time in the 100 metre freestyle final is also the second fastest in his age group in the United States, according to national coach Ben Smith.Washington has now won the gold medal in the 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle as well as a silver medal in the 50m backstroke at the regional swim meet.He has so far set three national records and personal bests in the 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly in what can only be described as a phenomenal showing in the Caribbean.Bermuda's nine-member team have won a total of seven medals in Bahamas so far, one more than the Island's track and field athletes won at the recent Carifta Games held on local soil.Saltus Grammar School student Shannon Hassell won the Island's remaining medals in the 100 metre backstroke (silver) and 50 metre backstroke (bronze).Schoolmate Philip Hagen has twice made the qualifying standard for this summer's Caribbean Islands Swimming while there have also been a number of other pesonal best established by local swimmers in Bahamas.
