Cyre Trott upsets Jadon Spriggs in Back to School tournament
Cyre Trott pulled off an upset in the quarter-finals of the boys under-16 on the second day of the Back to School tennis tournament, defeating Jadon Spriggs at Port Royal Tennis Courts in Southampton yesterday.
The unseeded Trott, a Temple of Tennis player, used his familiarity with the courts to prevail 7-6(1), 6-4 over Spriggs, who was the No 1 seed in the age group last year, and book his spot in the semi-finals.
Trott will now meet the No 2 seed Tobiah Goodchild in the last four of the competition, in one of the nine matches scheduled for today.
Will Britten fought from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 against Hasan Khan in the under-16 boys quarter-finals. However, his journey was brought to an end by Zachary McGuire, who eased to a 6-3, 6-1 win to book a spot in the final.
Eight matches were completed on the second day of the event that is sponsored by AXA Insurance company yesterday. Rain on Thursday saw some of the fixtures being carried over to yesterday.
McGuire, the No 1 seed in the boys under-18, who is in contention for two titles, defeated Goodchild, the second seed 7-6(9), 6-4 in the fourth round-robin. Goodchild went on to overcome Spriggs 6-0, 6-1 in one of the matches carried over from the first day.
Manuel Maldonado triumphed 6-1, 6-1 against Trystan Thompson in the boys under-12 fifth round-robin encounter.
In the boys under-14 second round-robin fixture, Khan prevailed 6-0, 6-0 over Julian Hands. In the same age group for girls, Lee Terceira enjoyed a 6-1, 7-5 success against Arianna Parra Delgado in the third round-robin match.
Twenty-five players are participating in the six divisions of the annual tournament. Michael Wolfe, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association, praised the budding tennis stars for their dedication on the court.
“All participants have given it their all in this competition,’’ Wolfe said. “We had some intense and entertaining matches on the second day.
“Cyre Trott beating Jadon Spriggs was an upset. It was a very competitive match from the two boys.
“On Saturday, action starts at 8.30am and we have nine matches on the schedule. Our tournament concludes on Sunday, with seven matches to be played.”
