Davis Cup hopefuls fight out final of WER Joell Memorial
Bermuda’s Davis Cup hopefuls were in action at the W.E.R Joell Memorial Tournament last week.
Wayne Montgomery and Zachary McGuire, two members of the historic Bermuda team who earned promotion to World Group II after beating Georgia in a play-off in February, were in action alongside Tariq Simons and Jack Keyes in the Men’s A draw.
Montgomery and Simons came through their semi-finals with the former beating Jack Keyes 6-0, 6-2, and the latter defeating McGuire 6-3, 7-5 to set up a final between a member of the historic Davis Cup squad and a player hoping to return for the home tie against Mexico in September.
But it was South African Montgomery who took the title, coming through a tight first set 7-5 before finding things easier and winning the second set 6-1.
Simons got some compensation after finishing runner-up in the singles by teaming up with David Thomas to win the men’s doubles crown.
The top seeds prevailed 6-4, 7-6 in a tight final against Sam Butler and Neil Towlson, who had beaten the young pair of McGuire and Tobiah Goodchild in the semi-final.
The Ladies A division was held in a round-robin format, with Chloe McBrearty topping the four-women group to become champion.
McBrearty won all three of her matches, beating Lee Terceira, Caitlin Conyers and Arianna Parra Delgado.
Terceira, who finished second in that group, went one better to claim the Ladies B title, winning both her matches in the round-robin format against Samantha Morgan and Delgado.
Will Britten fought through a field of seven men to take the men’s B title. He defeated Donn Trott 7-6, 6-3 in the final
