Tariq Simons in action at Temple of Tennis Tournament

Tariq Simons underlined his Davis Cup credentials by winning the men’s A singles title at the Temple of Tennis Tournament last weekend.

Simons, who was left out of the Davis Cup team for their win against Georgia in the World Group 2 play-offs in February, is hoping to be recalled for the home tie against Mexico in September and did his chances no harm by beating Zachary McGuire 6-1, 6-4 in the final.

With just a few months until the big Davis Cup tie on home soil, Simons is hoping his latest victory has caught the eye of the right people.

“I am glad to be back in the top four players in Bermuda along with Wayne [Montgomery], Daniel [Phillips] and Trey [Mallory],” Simons said.

“Obviously I'm looking to play Davis Cup but it’s a team event, so whether or not I play is dependent on the coach and the other players as the coach will pick whoever is the best player for that match on that day.

“I just intend to be strong enough that I’m a force in the team and I just need to be ready.”

Simons was battling a shoulder injury as he took on McGuire, who he has coached for the last couple of years, but is happy with his form building into a big summer.

“I have a slight injury in the right shoulder but I was able to pull out the win regardless,” Simons said.

“I just wasn't able to hit my forehands properly but everything else in my game was fine. I’m really just building my body back to high-level performance after I took such a long break out of tennis.

The training I went through in India to learn Hatha Yoga changed my body in a few ways in terms of strength and flexibility so I'm able to manage my physical stuff a lot better now than I was before I left.

“I’m definitely more powerful but I wouldn’t say just physically stronger, I changed a few things that were happening with my forehand and I’m able to generate a bit more authority on the ball.”

Simons is competing with McGuire for a Davis Cup team so was pleased to come through against a tough young competitor.

“He’s been my junior for the last two and a half years roughly, so I've developed his game to a good point along with a few other coaches on island,” Simons said.

“He's a good student, a good athlete, he listens well, he’s intense, mentally strong and physically inclined, so he's really a pleasure to work with.

“I did expect to beat him but it is good that we are competing like this because it's developing his game for the future.”

With 43 entries across seven divisions, there was a feast of tennis across the week at Port Royal, with Victoria Stephens coming out on top in a tight round-robin tournament to lift the women’s A singles title.

Stephens, Arianna Parra and Caitlin Conyers all won one match apiece, with Stephens clinching the title after losing fewest games.

Cyre Trott came out on top of a stacked field to beat Renie Marcos 7-5, 6-1 in the Men’s B Singles final. Marcos had beaten Oladapo Siyanbola 7-5, 6-1 in the semi-final, while Trott had overcome Jaire Lawrence-Salaam 6-3, 7-5.

Lee Terceira won the Women’s B Singles competition. After finishing unbeaten in a group containing Conyers and Ella Metschnabel, she did not lose a game in the final against Arianna Parra. Parra had made it into the final after finishing top of a group that featured Samantha Morgan and Kate Pursell.

Simons teamed up with Scott Redmond to win the men’s doubles competition. They were the only combination to end the round-robin tournament unbeaten.

The women’s doubles division also went to countback with three teams finishing tied with four points after each winning two games, but it was Cayla Cross and Zaire Simmons celebrating.

Jenson Bascome and Shonette Wilson beat McGuire and Parra 6-4, 6-3 to win the mixed doubles title.
