Tyler and Flora gunning for Games glory

Bermuda’s Tyler Butterfield and Flora Duffy will be among those vying for a place on the podium during tomorrow’s individual men’s and women’s triathlons at the Pan Am Games in Mexico.Butterfield produced a solid all-round display at the ITU Triathlon World Cup in Japan earlier this year, finishing 54th overall to show positive signs he is recovering from shin splints that has dogged the elite athlete in recent years. The Colorado-based athlete is competing in a men’s field boasting 39 competitors from 21 countries.Duffy will be high on confidence going into the women’s event, having produced an inspiring top ten display at last month’s Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Grand Prix final in Beijing, China. The University of Colorado senior placed ninth in an elite women’s field boasting Olympic and world champions.Duffy, 24, also placed sixth at this month’s Huatulco World Cup event in Mexico where she hopes her current rich vein of form will continue tomorrow at the API Maritime Terminal in Puerto Vallarta.“I would like to finish in the top five or six . .. but it all depends on how the races will unfold,” she said.Duffy is competing in a women’s field comprised of 28 athletes from 13 countries.Earlier this year Butterfield and Duffy were awarded London 2012 Scholarships to help them prepare for next summer’s Olympic Games. Also in action for Bermuda at the Pan Am Games tomorrow is track and field athlete Shianne Smith who is competing in the women’s Heptathlon.Yesterday saw elite swimmer Kiera Aitken fail to reach the finals of the women’s 50 metre freestyle. Her time of 27.27 was ten hundredths of a second slower than her fastest time posted last year (27.17) over the distance.“I missed the ‘B’ final by three hundredths of a second and so that was disappointing,” Aitken said. Also in action yesterday was sailor Malcolm Smith who was scheduled to compete in the seventh and eighth races in the Sunfish class. The veteran sailor entered the day’s racing at Vallarta Yacht Club ninth in the 12 boat fleet. Only the top five sailors after ten races will advance to tomorrow’s medal race.Next week will see Bermuda also represented in men’s and women’s bowling, showjumping and track and field.
