Storm in a teacup: downgraded Philippe passes quietly

Tropical Storm Philippe was downgraded to a tropical cyclone and brought significantly less winds and rain than forecast.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, thanked the public for their vigilance and preparedness ahead of the storm.

He said: “While the impact has been less severe than initially anticipated, it is crucial that we remain cautious and aware that hurricane season ends on November 30."

The Bermuda Weather Service issued its final advisory on Philippe at noon, officially ending the Tropical Storm Warning that had been in place.

Philippe's closest point of approach to Bermuda was about 25 miles off the island at 6pm but turned out to be much less severe than expected.

But Mr Weeks urged the public to exercise caution while travelling on the roads as the forecast suggests the possibility of gale-force winds.

Rough surf and rip currents make it unsafe to enter the water.

The BWS said in its forecast: “Cloudy to overcast conditions persisted through the night with intermittent periods of showers/rain in advance of Tropical Storm Philippe as it continued its approach to the area.

“At the start of the night, the relative humidity was between 70 to 75 per cent and most of the precipitation that tried to move into the area dissipated rather quickly until the humidity got above 85 per cent which then saw showers develop, becoming moderate at times.

“The latest satellite imagery shows extensive cloud cover over the area and upstream associated with Tropical Storm Philippe. The latest radar imagery shows moderate to strong echoes embedded in rainbands moving into the area from the southeast.”
