Christmas is coming, time to get moving

Having a workout buddy can provide motivation and accountability

There are nine weeks left until Christmas.

The holiday season is quickly approaching and with it comes loads of social gatherings and an abundance of tempting treats. While it's perfectly fine to indulge in the joys of the season, it's crucial to maintain a healthy balance, especially when it comes to physical activity.

Many people are already planning to put their workout routines on hold during this time, opting to prioritise holiday festivities and relaxation. However, maintaining a healthy exercise regimen during the holidays is more important than ever because it can counteract the effects of increased food intake.

Counteracting holiday indulgences

The holidays are often synonymous with an abundance of rich foods and sugary treats. While enjoying these delicacies is part of the festive spirit, it's important to balance indulgence with healthy habits. Regular exercise can help offset the extra calories consumed during the holidays, preventing unwanted weight gain and maintaining overall fitness.

Managing holiday stress

The holiday season can also be a time of increased stress, with the pressure of gift-giving, social obligations and family gatherings. Exercise is a proven stress reliever, releasing endorphins that boost mood and promote relaxation. Maintaining a workout routine can help manage holiday stress and keep you feeling energised and positive.

Socialising through fitness

The holidays are a time for connecting with loved ones and exercise can be a fun and an engaging way to socialise. Instead of just indulging in food and drinks, consider organising group fitness activities – walking, running, yoga, private fitness parties, or even a friendly game of beach volleyball. These activities not only promote physical wellbeing but also foster a sense of camaraderie and shared experiences.

Tips for staying active during the holidays

∎ Schedule workouts in advance

Treat your workouts like important appointments and schedule them into your calendar.

∎ Find a workout buddy

Having a workout buddy can provide motivation and accountability.

∎ Incorporate exercise into your daily routine

Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further away from your destination or take a fast walk during your lunch break.

∎ Choose activities you enjoy

If you don't enjoy running, try swimming or dancing instead.

∎ Set realistic goals

Don't try to overhaul your entire fitness routine during the holidays. Focus on maintaining your current level of activity and gradually increasing it over time.

Remember, exercise doesn't have to be a chore. Find activities that you really enjoy and make them a part of your holiday celebrations. By prioritising physical activity during the holiday season, you'll not only maintain your fitness but also enhance your overall wellbeing and enjoy the holidays to the fullest.
