Be well and praise yourself

Celebrate and empower yourself: Betty Doyling (File photograph)

It’s February already. How are the "New Year, New Me” goals working for you? I think it’s time to forget this mentality and embrace a more empowering message: every body is beautiful, right now, exactly as it is.

Our bodies are incredible, carrying us through every chapter of life. They bear the challenges of our experiences, big and small – the stretch marks from carrying precious lives, the scars that tell stories of resilience, the curves that shift with time and circumstance.

These aren't imperfections, they're testimonials to a life lived.

Instead of aiming for some idealised future version, let's cultivate praises for the body we have today.

Here's why:

1, You Are Worthy, Now: You don't have to earn love or belonging through weight loss or drastic changes. Your worth comes simply from just being you. Focus on the amazing things your body already does, from powering your laugh to carrying you through adventures.

2, Circumstances Don't Define You: Whether you've gained weight due to stress, given birth, or faced illness, remember that your body's journey is unique. Treat it with kindness and understanding, not judgment.

3, Beauty Comes in All Shapes and Sizes: Social media often portrays a narrow definition of beauty, but that's just one perspective. Embrace the diversity of bodies around you and challenge narrow beauty standards. Recognise that true beauty shines from within, in your confidence, spirit, and kindness.

4, Self-Love is Key to Happiness: When you learn to appreciate your body, you unlock a well of self-acceptance and confidence. This transfers into all aspects of your life, boosting your mood, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

So, how do we cultivate this love? Here are some simple steps:

Practise gratitude: Write down three things you appreciate about your body each day. It could be its strength, flexibility, or even just the ability to taste your favourite food.

Challenge negative self-talk: When you notice unkind thoughts about your body, replace them with affirmations of self-love and acceptance.

Move your body with joy: Find activities you genuinely enjoy, be it dancing, swimming, or simply walking in nature.

Focus on how movement makes you feel, not how it changes your appearance.

Surround yourself with positivity: Seek out media and people who celebrate body diversity and promote self-acceptance.

Remember, loving your body is a continuous journey.

There will be ups and downs, but every step towards self-compassion is a step in the right direction.

Let's ditch the pressure to change and embrace the beautiful, uniqueness that we already possess right now.

Remember this week that, you are amazing, just as you are. Celebrate your body, appreciate its journey, and radiate the confidence that comes from true self-love.
