It’s not too late to set a fitness goal

Just for you: Betty Doyling writes that the key to fitness is to pick something that excites you and fits your lifestyle (Photograph submitted)

Recently, I finished as one of the coaches for the Beat the Couch race, an inspiring event where people from all walks of life take on the challenge of running their first 5K. Watching these determined runners cross the finish line, faces beaming with pride, is a powerful reminder that anyone can achieve a fitness goal.

Remember that time you stopped eating chips for a while to “get in shape?".

You might not have run a marathon that day, but you took a step towards a healthier you. That first step, that initial goal, is what can jump-start your fitness journey.

Think about it: how many people have gone from couch potato to 5K champion?

It might seem like a distant dream, but with the right goal in sight, it's totally achievable. And the beauty is, your goal doesn't have to be just a 5K race!

Maybe running isn't your thing. Perhaps you dream of conquering a spin class, mastering a yoga pose, or simply feeling more energised throughout the day.

The key is to pick something that excites youand fits your lifestyle.

Here's the thing: even though half the year is already gone, that doesn't mean it's too late to set a new fitness goal.

Think of it as a fresh start! Here are some tips to pick the perfect fit for you:

Consider your interests: What activities do you find enjoyable? Walking? Running? Swimming? Weight Training? Choose something you'll look forward to doing.

Start small and specific: Don't jump straight into training for an ironman or registering for six days of circuit training. Aim for something achievable, like attending two classes a week, running a mile or mastering a 20-minute yoga flow.

Set a time frame: Give yourself a realistic deadline to reach your goal. This will keep you motivated and focused.

Remember, cutting back on processed foods was a start. Now it's your turn to set a real goal, lace up your shoes (or yoga mat!), and make it happen!
