Beyond the finish line

Setting goals: Betty Doyling after running in the 2025 Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby (Photograph supplied)

As the cheers of the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby fade into the distance, and the last of the participants crossed that symbolic finish line, a profound realisation lingers. Whether you ran the full 13.1 miles or contributed to a relay team, everyone who participated shared a common thread: a goal.

That desire to achieve, to push limits, and to cross that finish line holds far more significance than just a single race; it's a powerful metaphor for staying fit, focused, and fulfilled throughout the year, and for life itself.

The months leading up to the half-marathon are a testament to true dedication.

Early-morning runs or late in the evening, disciplined training schedules, and committing to a nutritious diet all played a part in preparing for race day.

This isn't just about physical endurance; it's about setting a tangible objective and meticulously working towards it.

It's about breaking down a daunting distance into manageable segments, celebrating small victories along the way, and learning to push through discomfort.

Consider the journey of training. There are days of exhilaration where every stride feels effortless, and then there are days of doubt and fatigue.

Yet, the main goal keeps you going. This mirrors the constant change of life and our pursuit of personal aspirations.

We all encounter hurdles, whether in our careers, relationships, or personal wellbeing.

The resilience pushed on the running path – the ability to keep moving forward despite the burning lungs or aching muscles – is a valuable asset in navigating life's challenges.

The half-marathon also highlights the power of our amazing Bermudian community.

The camaraderie among runners, the encouraging shouts, signs, whistles and overall joy from spectators lining the streets, and the shared sense of accomplishment at the end create an undeniable bond.

This reminds us that while our personal journeys are unique, we thrive when supported by others.

Just as a training partner can pull you through a tough session, a supportive network is crucial for achieving any long-term goal.

So, as the island returns to its usual rhythm, let the spirit of the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby continue to inspire us.

The finish line wasn't an end, but a powerful reminder of what we are capable of when we set our minds to something.

Let that same goal-oriented mindset, coupled with consistency, self-care, and the support of our community, propel us to not just stay fit year-round, but to run our best race in the marathon of life.

Because truly, “The Future Is Upon Us,” and it's built on the disciplined, resilient steps we take today.
