Embrace the ‘boring’ – it is your secret weapon for success

I stumbled upon an Instagram video post recently that really resonated with me: “Consistency is boring.“ At first glance, it might seem counterintuitive. We are constantly bombarded with messages about excitement and instant gratification. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that this seemingly dull truth holds the key to unlocking significant achievements in nearly every area of life.

The post went on to elaborate that doing something consistently well, over and over and over again, for days, months, and years, eventually leads to success. And that's where the “boring” comes in.

Consider my workout journey. For the past ten plus years, I've committed to hitting the pavement or working out in someway at least three times per week sometimes.

Have all of them been personal bests? Absolutely not. In over a decade of consistent training, I can count on one hand the number of truly “fabulous” workouts or runs I have had — the ones where I felt absolutely effortless, crushed a new distance record, or set a blistering pace.

Maybe six or seven in total. Sometimes, the runs I pour my heart in to, like those intense speed work sessions, barely feel like progress, while a casual, easy jog unexpectedly leaves me feeling incredible.

But the reality of sustainable weight loss isn't about thrill-seeking. It's about a disciplined routine: a high protein breakfast, a shake at 11am, a chicken salad at 2pm, rice cakes at 5pm, chicken breast at 8pm, then bed, rest, and repeat.

It is monotonous. It is predictable. It is boring! Yet, if we all could somehow get “addicted” to that boring routine for two or three years, we would be exactly where we want to be physically and mentally.

If you show up and become addicted to the boring act of consistency, regardless of the immediate outcome. That relentless, unsexy consistency will ultimately create extra success.

This is where the rubber meets the road. Trainers and health professionals literally share everything they know and offer all the advice.

But what will we do with it? Will we actually do it? Will we commit to the boring, repetitive steps that lead to results? Or will we give in to burnout after a week, a month, or a year because the novelty wears off?

So many people know what they need to do; their biggest hurdle is actually and consistently doing it.

So, here's my challenge to you this summer: Embrace the boring. Find the discipline to commit to the consistent, unexciting (somewhat) hot and humid workouts, that will over time, compound into extraordinary success.

Because in a world obsessed with instant gratification, getting used to the boring might just be your most powerful, and secret, weapon.
