Cup Match with a twist

Showing her colours: Betty Doyling writes that just because your regular routine is on pause doesn’t mean your health habits have to fall apart (Photograph submitted)

In case you haven’t heard the buzz in the Crown and Anchor tables or the sizzle of fried fish frying — Cup Match is here. And whether you’re Team Somerset (defending champs, again …) or praying for a miracle from St. George’s, one thing’s for sure: this weekend is Bermuda’s version of organised chaos wrapped in culture, cricket, and campouts.

Now, we know this long weekend is no ordinary break. Thursday is Game Day One, Friday is Day Two, and by Saturday the island is moving at half-speed — but still managing to party at full capacity. Sunday is Non-Mariners, and hopefully you have taken off on Monday!

So where does fitness fit in?

Here’s the twist: it’s OK to take a break from your usual routine.

Yes, you heard it from me. Your workout this weekend might look more like screaming for your team, walking around on the field in your favourite team colours, or heading to the beach for a swim.

But, just because your regular routine is on pause doesn’t mean your health habits have to fall apart.

Here are a few simple “fit tips” to weave into the weekend madness:

• Hydration is a non-negotiable. It’s hot. It’s humid. And rum swizzles don’t count as electrolyte replacements. Aim for a glass of water between each drink and carry a refillable bottle wherever you go.

• Protein still matters. Whether it’s friend fish, burgers, or BBQ chicken, make sure each plate has some protein to keep you full and balanced.

• Eat the rainbow. Don’t forget to stack your plate with fresh fruit, leafy greens, and colourful veggies. They’ll help your body detox without you even realising it.

• Move for joy. This weekend, movement doesn’t have to mean reps and sets. It can be limbo competitions, football, ferry hopping, or walking from your parked car up the stairs to the last camp on the field.

The main message? Celebrate, but don’t sabotage. Wellness isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being intentional.

A little preparation goes a long way in helping you enjoy the vibes of Cup Match and feel like yourself when Monday morning hits.

So raise your reusable bottle, cheer on your team (Somerset, we see you), and remember: the best kind of balance is the one that lets you live fully and feel good doing it.

Happy Cup Match, Bermuda. Stay moving, stay mindful, and most importantly, stay hydrated and B-ACTIVE FOR LIFE!
