Spanish culture, language and sandwiches bring learning to life for students

Whitney students and staff absorb the beauty of traditional Barcelona.

The Whitney Institute Middle School Foreign Language department embarked on a special excursion to Spain from April 19 to 27, 2008. The trip was a massive success by all accounts. Sudan Furbert was a student on that trip. Here is her personal account:

Just recently, I returned from Barcelona, Spain on the school Spanish trip. I lived with my pen pal Anna Fernandez and her family. All the students who went were required to go to school from 8.30 a.m. to 2 or 3 p.m. It was cool since none of the teachers spoke English and we were forced to depend on what we knew and make conclusions when we didn't know something.

It was interesting to observe and learn about Spanish culture. For example, at every recess and after school the children eat sandwiches.

To us a sandwich is made on slice of bread, but in Barcelona a sandwich is made on a sub roll. Usually we put ham, egg, turkey or cheese on our sandwiches; however, in Barcelona some of the favourites things to put on bread are salami, bacon, tomato juice and chocolate. The only sandwich I tried while I was out there was the chocolate sandwich, and I have to say it wasn't bad. Overall my experience was amazing. I really enjoyed myself and I would love to do it again any day.
