Getting a taste for life as a chef

Creative cooks: Whitney Institute students Shile? Sharrieff-Hayward, Satiqua Buttefiled ?Wade, Savannah Lewis enoyed creativity in the kitchen during a visit to the Bermuda College recently.

Thirty-three students travelled to the Bermuda College to attend the Corange Science fair on October 20. It was an inspiring day during which the students were able to experience the many departments, including the Culinary Arts division. Three students share their thoughts on the day below.Sihle Sharrieff-Hayward commented: “Today I went to the Bermuda College and was paired with Monique Richardson as her apprentice. She taught me how to make mashed potatoes, pork and ice cream. The meal we made tasted good, and maybe sometime I can show my family how to make these recipes. I may even make it for dinner this weekend. I had a lot of fun learning how to cook”.Satiqua Butterfield-Wade said: “Today we went to the Bermuda College for the Science week. My student chef was Nahil Hassell. He taught me how to cook grilled pepper steak. My favourite part was being hands-on. It was interesting to see how a kitchen really runs. It can be very chaotic.”Savannah Lewis said: “I had fun making mac ‘n’ cheese and bbq chicken. My trainer cook was Ryan and he was fun to work with. He made me laugh and I think we made a good team. I enjoyed being his shadow. When we finished cooking we got to eat the food. It tasted really good. I ate so much my stomach was full.”
