Young phenoms serve up aces on tennis courts

Rising young stars on the tennis scene in Bermuda are brother and sister, Daniel and Imani Phillips.Daniel is seven years old and Imani is ten years old and they can often be found practicing at the Temple of Tennis, located at Port Royal tennis courts. Daniel and Imani both attend Somerset Primary School and these young students have an incredible passion for the game of tennis. One only needs to drive by the tennis courts at Port Royal to see how much dedication and fun Daniel and Imani really have. Both Daniel and Imani show talent beyond their years and it is clear from watching them both that they have a love for this sport. Daniel trains every other day for two hours and Imani trains at least three times per week.Daniel and Imani were introduced to the game of tennis by their parents and soon after learned their tennis skills under the instruction of tennis professional Sammy Maybury, fondly referred to as “Uncle Sam”. Daniel was two years old when he first set foot on the tennis court and Imani was three. It wasn’t long before Daniel and Imani’s parents noticed how well their children made contact with the tennis ball, even at such an early age. Today, Daniel is taught by tennis professional Howard Cross, and Daniel is eager to spend as much time practicing on the tennis courts as he can. Imani has tennis lessons with professional Walter Burgess and she too can be found practicing as often as possible at the Temple of Tennis at Port Royal. Fitness plays a large part in the game of tennis and Imani likes the challenge of running up and down the hills surrounding the tennis courts in order to maintain her level of fitness.Both Daniel and Imani participate in the Pepperidge Farm tennis programme which improves their match play. Daniel says “I like to win at Pepperidge Farm as it makes me feel very happy, and I also like to make my mommy and daddy proud”. Imani enjoys the competition and being in control of the ball and her racquet.Daniel and Imani play competitively in as many tournaments as they can. Daniel has had success in winning the 2011 Langton Tournament in the Under-8 category and most recently Daniel won the Under-8 category of the Red Ball tournament, and also was the runner-up in the Under-10 category at the Cromwell Manders tournament.This year, Imani was the winner in the Under-10 division and runner-up in the Under-12 division of the Cromwell Manders Tournament. Also this year, Imani won the Under-10s in the Red Ball Tournament and the Under-10s in the Green Ball Tournament. In addition, Daniel and Imani have had the opportunity to play tennis on the grass courts in England where Daniel likes the bounce and the ability to slice the ball more than on other surfaces. In 2011 Daniel was the runner-up at the 61st Frinton Junior Open Tournament in England in the Under-8 division.Daniel’s dream is to continue playing tennis and to one day represent Bermuda, and Imani would like to play tennis well enough to earn a university sports scholarship. Daniel loves to play both singles and doubles, and his favourite tennis strokes are the groundstroke, the backhand in particular, and he enjoys using topspin to enhance his game. Imani prefers to play doubles, and her favourite part of the game is both the approach shot and the drop shot.As far as favourite players, locally, uncle Ricky Mallory tops the list for Daniel, and professionally, Daniel favours Novak Djokovic. Imani admires professional tennis player Serena Williams and enjoys watching Carolita Joseph, also known as “CJ”, on Bermuda’s tennis courts.These talented young tennis players are definitely names to watch out for in the future.
