Map project proves students on right path

First Prev 1 2 Next Last

Ms Roberts and Mrs Rodday, Primary 3 teachers at St George’s Preparatory School, developed a Bermuda Map Project for the Social Studies curriculum.

The Map project was based on the following criteria:

— Label the map by Parishes — don’t forget to include the capital of Bermuda!

— Label/draw key landmarks in each parish.

— Label the major landforms in Bermuda and the bodies of water (marshes, caves, jungles, cliffs, pounds, sounds, harbours, beaches, etc).

— Label all bridges.

— Label all nature reserves.

— Draw a key for your map.

— Include cardinal directions (north, south, east and west).

Then students had to write an article to go along with their map. These were some of the ideas they could write about:

— Pretend you are writing an article for a tourist magazine trying to get tourists to come to your landmark. Visit one of the above areas and do a mini write up about the place you visited. Think about the following questions while you visit:

— What is it called/how did it get that name?

— Why is it special?

— What did you learn about/ what interested you?

— What can you find when you go there?

— Important facts about the area — when was it developed, who named/discovered it.

— Take pictures of you exploring the area and include in your write up.
