Santa hats and Christmas carols

In tune: BHS musicians with Linda Parker and Dr Tully visit Westmeath to play

Recently, our musicians from primary and secondary at BHS travelled to the Olde Towne of St George to perform during the National Trust Walkabout. The Olde Towne looked lovely with Xmas lights strung along all the little streets and Christmas trees in the square.

We performed at the Old Globe Hotel. We had violin and flute trios, a saxophone duet, as well as Mrs Crawford’s recorder ensemble. In addition, Dr Tully brought the senior wind and string ensemble to perform. The Globe Hotel is right in the heart of the Olde Towne and was built more than 300 years ago. At one time, when Governor Samuel Day lived there, it was actually Government House for all of Bermuda! There are lots of pictures of how St George looked all those years ago.

Lots of people came to hear our musicians performing their favourite Christmas Song including Jingle Bells, Away in a Manger, Let it Snow , and of course one of the most famous Christmas carols in the world, Silent Night.

St George was full of visitors for the evening, and many of them came to listen to us perform. At the end of the performance all the visitors to the Globe Hotel joined us to sing The First Noel as our musicians played — and of course we were all wearing our Santa hats for the occasion. We had a lovely evening performing there.

Last week, we also went to Peace Lutheran Church to play some music for the Seniors. Mrs Crawford had the bell choir perform and once again as we played, we heard the audience join in to sing along as we played Christmas carols for them. We go to Peace Lutheran Church every year and we really enjoy seeing everyone there. Afterwards, the ladies there handed cookies and juice to us to thank us for performing.

We also visited the Hamilton Princess and put on a little concert in the foyer for arrival of Santa Claus. Everyone gave us a big round of applause!

Just before we finished school for Christmas, our primary and secondary musicians visited Westmeath to perform for the senior citizens there. We all love going to Westmeath, and some of the seniors there used to attend BHS.

Our principal, Linda Parker, brought a gift for the residents of Westmeath — a quilt in BHS colours that an alumna had crocheted. We all got a big round of applause.

We have been invited back to perform at Westmeath at Easter, so we shall start rehearsing as soon as we return to school. This has been a very exciting Christmas for us with lots of concerts, and we have had lots of fun.
