Bermuda break duck in style

Bermuda got off the mark against Jamaica yesterday with a 3-0 win

Bermuda beat Jamaica to record their first win at the 2014 Junior Davis Cup pre-qualifying tournament in the Dominican Republic yesterday.

The unseeded Bermuda squad swept the three-match series against their island rivals, winning the two singles matches and men’s doubles match in group C at the National Sports Park in Santo Domingo.

Although their qualification dreams were officially dashed with their second day loss to fith ranked El Salvador, the side went out looking to finish on a high.

Tanner Boyle, Bermuda’s No?2, beat Daniel Hill in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to give the Islanders the early advantage in the tie in just over one hour.

Nicholas Lines, who was put in the No1 spot for the tournament, followed Boyles’ lead, defeating Kyle Martin in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 in a marathon match that lasted two hours, 26 minutes. The duo then teamed up to beat Hill and Cliff Dwyer 6-2, 7-6 in one hour, 30 minutes to end the round robin on a winning note.

The win sends the team into the ninth to twelfth-place play-offs today, where they play Curacao.

In the top-of-the-table clash earlier in the day, fourth-seeded Aruba beat fifth-seeded El Salvador 2-1, winning the two singles matches, thus rendering the men’s doubles, which El Salvador won, irrelevant.

Fifteen countries are represented at the tournament, which consists of three groups of four teams and one group of three.

At the conclusion of the round-robin phase, the top two countries in each group will advance to the main draw, with the rest consigned to a consolation event.

The top country in the main draw will progress to the final qualifying event, to be held from May 8 to 10, when they will join teams from Mexico, United States and Canada.
