Impaired driver said ‘lock me up’

A drink-driver told police to “lock me up, I don’t give a f***” after being arrested.

Tio Smith, 38, of Southampton, was spotted at about 3.24am on September 14 by a uniformed patrol officer, who noticed him speeding along Church Street near Queen Street.

When the officer pulled alongside him, he noticed Smith’s eyes were glazed and he smelt of alcohol. When Smith got out of the car he was unsteady on his feet and arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired.

He told the officer to “lock me up, I don’t give a f***” and continued to be uncooperative, prosecutor Susan Mulligan told Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Smith pleaded guilty to driving while impaired.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,500 to be paid by October 23 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 12 months.
