Harvey given licence to thrill

Attack-minded: defender Harvey caught the eye in Bermuda’s friendlies against Grenada

Jalen Harvey is expected to be granted his first taste of World Cup qualifying action for Bermuda tomorrow and cannot wait to get out and show the world what he can do.

The DePaul University student said that he was “excited and honoured” to be representing his country and hopes to use it as a springboard to launch a professional career.

Harvey, who has one year left of college, also plans on soaking up as much knowledge as he can from the likes of Nahki Wells, Jonté Smith and Rai Simons, all of whom are making careers for themselves abroad.

“Hopefully I’ll get seen by an MLS team playing for DePaul in the Big East,” Harvey said.

“If that doesn’t work out I’ll go to England and do some tryouts, maybe follow the path of Nahki and rest of the guys.

“It’s a great experience playing with him and seeing what they’ve done.”

First, however, Harvey will concentrate on the qualifier against Bahamas tomorrow in Nassau and in Bermuda on Sunday, games in which he is likely to play an integral role in his side’s attacking approach.

Likely to be used as a left wing-back by Andrew Bascome, the Bermuda head coach, Harvey, who is a centre back for DePaul, said it is a role that he loves to play.

“This position, and the style that we play, I love getting up the field, I get to attack a lot,” Harvey said.

“It involves a lot of work, making sure I get back and everything, but I’m cut out to do it. One of my things is my fitness, so it’s not a problem for me.”

Bascome’s approach requires a lot of his players, not only in terms of work rate, but also with their discipline in getting back to defend.

Harvey, however, said he had been given a licence to attack and hopes to repay his coach’s trust in him to perform both roles.

“I love the freedom of getting forward, Andrew [Bascome] encourages me to get forward, so you know, it’s always exciting that I might have a chance to get an assist or a goal,” he said.

Bascome already knows that he can trust Harvey to do what is being asked of him, there was ample evidence of that fact in the two warm-up games against Grenada.

“I’m extremely excited, I think playing in the US has prepared me for this, and coming to play for the Bermuda national team is just a great honour,” Harvey said.
